Full of nostalgia and irresistible charm, “The Marvelous Wonderettes” come to the Chemainus Theatre bringing us a delightful blast from the past.
Chemainus Theatre opened its 2020 season with a blast from the past!
Full of nostalgia and irresistible charm, “The Marvelous Wonderettes” take the crazy moment-by-moment emotions, relational highs and lows, and angst of young love and sing about it all.
I should have brought my poodle skirt! Suzy, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou and Missy aka “The Marvelous Wonderettes” remind us of our high school days as they entertain for the senior prom.
With beautifully blended voices, they sing into our hearts, telling the story of sweet 1958 love and relationships.
Simpler times, similar struggles.
I’m not sure what I was expecting, but only 4 women on stage for the entire performance was a surprise. But in case you wonder if there’s not enough going on, don’t worry. These women certainly command the stage. Singing familiar songs like “Mr. Sandman,” “Lipstick on Your Collar” and “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” the audience is easily drawn into 1958.
We join in the prom ourselves unknowingly as we vote for prom queen and even play 2 different characters in the story. (Be careful where you sit!) It’s all good fun and part of what we have come to love about The Chemainus Theatre.
After intermission, the Marvelous Wonderettes rejoined us on stage for our 10 year reunion, this time singing songs of the 1960s. It’s the same girls, just a bit older this time. Their friendships and love interests have another layer as the girls gather once again to lead us reunion-goers.
But it was more than just a concert.
The four very different personalities of the all-girl music group share their relational woes and joys and find just the perfect songs to share it with us all. In fact, the songs we all know and love, simply tell the Wonderettes’ stories. Quite seamlessly, I might add.
The Marvelous Wonderettes songs brings nostalgia in large doses.
The Chemainus Theatre Festival’s commitment to professional, family-friendly, quality shows is evident from the moment you step through the doors.
We love starting our evening off with a fantastic dinner in The Playbill Dining Room upstairs.
It’s the perfect start to any theatre experience.
The Chemainus Playbill buffet meal always offers fresh, locally sourced (when possible) food and all of it tastes delicious.
I’m not kidding.
The hardest part is pacing ourselves so we don’t overeat! Their homemade foccasia bread hits the spot and knowing there is no rush to eat quickly to make room for the next guests makes for a relaxed meal. I’m not sure how they prepared the salmon this time around, but it was so tender and not the least bit dried out. Even though we pace ourselves, one serving just wasn’t enough. Check out the latest menu on the Chemainus Theatre website.
“The Marvelous Wonderettes” is only in Chemainus until March 28th, so get your tickets before you miss out on this fantastic evening of entertainment with someone special.
