Step into the world of Sherlock Holmes at Chemainus Theatre’s Baskerville, where five actors masterfully portray 40 characters in a dazzling, fast-paced mystery full of wit, talent, and theatrical magic.
Brilliant. Clever. Witty.
These are the qualities we’ve come to expect from Sherlock Holmes and exactly what The Chemainus Theatre delivers in its current production of Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.
However—and this is a significant however—when The Chemainus Theatre chooses just five actors to portray 40 different characters, the cleverness goes off the charts.

As frequent patrons of The Chemainus Theatre, we rarely miss a show, and we are consistently impressed by the level of talent on display. But Baskerville takes that talent to a whole new level. We were absolutely amazed.
Charlie Gallant and Alex Gullason bring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to life with impressive nuance. Then there are the powerhouse performances by Abraham Asto, Jay Clift, and Caitlin Driscoll. Between the three of them, they seamlessly transform into the remaining 37 characters, each with distinct accents, mannerisms, and of course costumes.

The backstage logistics must have been a feat in itself! Even days later, I’m still in awe of this production.
The story follows the familiar arc of a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery: a death, a desperate plea for Holmes’ help, a web of clues, and naturally a brilliant solution from the unmatched mind of Sherlock. But just because the formula is familiar doesn’t make it any less thrilling.
In fact, the fast-paced dialogue demands your full attention – miss a line and you risk being left behind like happened to Jay a couple times!

Every aspect of the production is clever and meticulously crafted. Scene transitions are seamless, often unfolding in delightful and humorous ways. As each actor steps into a new role, we’re effortlessly drawn deeper into this witty, intricate mystery.
It’s rare that a play leaves me wanting more, but Baskerville at The Chemainus Theatre has done just that. The layers of intrigue, sharp humor, and rapid-fire dialogue have made me eager to see it again, I’m certain I’d catch even more nuances and jokes the second time around.
Baskerville runs for only a few more weeks, and this is a show you absolutely don’t want to miss. If my enthusiasm seems over the top, go see it for yourself and see if you don’t agree.

This is a brilliantly executed mystery, and one of the most entertaining evenings we’ve had in a long time.
And perhaps we enjoyed it even more because we began the evening at The Playbill Dining Room.

The chef has truly perfected the buffet: colourful, flavourful salads, perfectly roasted vegetables, and a beautifully cooked ham at the carving station.
The food is consistently delicious.

And the desserts?
The only problem is choosing between them. Whatever you pick – a meal before the show is a fantastic way to enhance the experience.
