While the rest of Vancouver Island is loosely throwing around the word “resort”, see why the Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke can truly own this title.
Bypassing Victoria all together we kept driving West and quickly realized it should have done a long time ago.
Our sites were set on a quaint coastal community called Sooke located on the Southwestern side of Vancouver Island. An adventurous 3 night family vacation in Sooke was in store. We loved every bit of it and, once again, it had a lot to do with our choice in accommodation.
Vancouver Island seems to toss the word “resort” around a little too loosely. We once stayed at a campground in Tofino called Mackenzie Beach “Resort” which consists of packing campers in like sardines, tiny rustic cottages, cranky managers, and a pool you need to pay extra for.
Talk about delusional!
Needless to say we advise you not to stay at that “resort.”
In this case the Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke, appropriately fits the category of a Vancouver Island Resort without question.
Here we experienced a first-class welcome. With an absolutely stunning and grand lobby and front entrance, we haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else on the Island.
The staff were friendly and helpful, but the bellboys were a little young… they tried hard so we gave them a tip anyway.
The welcome basket in our room was off the charts delicious.
Stalked full of local Vancouver Island treats like smoked salmon, Little Qualicum Cheeseworks, and Sea Salt Dark Chocolate, raincoat crisps fresh speciality crackers… mmmmmm SO GOOD.
A little word to the wise, don’t spill the salmon juice in your fridge unless you really want your room to smell like a salmon packaging plant. While it’s a delicious smell when eating smoked salmon, it’s nice for the odor to go away after you’re done. Thanks to some cleaning supplies from the front desk we took care of that after we realized what had happened.
Here is a quick snapshot on why we love this Vancouver Island Sooke Resort:
We were fortunate to reserve two adjoining rooms with a beautiful vista view of the ocean harbour. As soon as the door to our room opened, we all went straight through to the other side onto the oceanfront balcony.
The kids thought it was a hoot being able to have their own balcony right beside ours. We were so close to the ocean we could see the seals swimming by and enjoying treats the fisherman would throw to them.
The view throughout the day was peaceful and relaxing, however our favourite was the sunsets. Reminiscing about our day while watching the colours change on the water sure helped get us ready for bed.
Sooke Area Activities
Beach exploring is one of our favourite FREE activities when on a family Vancouver Island vacation. Every beach is unique and you never know what you are going to see or do when exploring a new beach with kids.
The drive between Sooke and Port Renfrew will keep you busy for days exploring new beaches, not to mention this part of Vancouver Island coastline boasts the world famous West Coast Trail.
Everyone in our family loved Adrena LINE Zip Line Adventure Tours just outside of Sooke.
Our 6, 7 and 9 year old had an absolute blast and they all say it was the highlight of their Sooke vacation. It exceeded every one of our expectations and we couldn’t recommend this family adventure enough to you no matter what your age.
I can still see the smiles on everyone’s face and hear Gretta’s giggles as she zipped onto the awaiting platforms.
If beach exploring or zip lining isn’t your thing, then rest assured this coastal town has plenty of other options like hiking, kayaking, deep sea fishing, and whale watching.
You can connect to all these activities litterally steps away from the Prestige Oceanfront Resort.
Le Sooke Spa
While enjoying your stay at Prestige Oceanfront Resort, it’s easy to get a massage, facial, pedicure or salon treatment here. This small spa is very relaxed and comfortable and you can even enjoy a view of the ocean while getting a pedicure.
The staff at Le Sooke Spa are friendly and treat you like family all while pampering the socks off of you. I definitely recommend one of the full body treatments. You’ll leave relaxed and rejuvenated at the same time.
Hands down Prestige Oceanfront Resort wins the award for the best hotel workout room I have ever had the privilege of using. Oceanview, state of the art equipment, and LARGE. I am talking about grab your kids by the hands and swing them around large.
I told Gretta that if we could take their gym and put it in our basement, she would have one well built husband on her hands. Good thing she loves me just the way I am because that gym must cost a small fortune.
As always the pool and hot tub was the most popular spot in the resort for the Traveling Islander kids.
They loved opening up the sliding doors and running outside to sunbathe and then back into the hot-tub. I say the hot-tub, because I’m not sure if the pool was heated. The true test of a hotel pool temperature is what kind of scream I belt out when jumping in.
My kids said I sounded like a little girl… so it was about that cold.
When hotels have extras like a spa, a wine & raw bar (Yesaki’s), a coffee house, on-site restaurant, and a marina out the back door they deserve the title of “Resort” as far as I’m concerned. Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke had all of these.
Note: Yesaki’s Wine & Raw Bar and the coffee house is only open during select times.
Our Adjoining Rooms
We are teaching our kids to be grateful with whatever family vacation ensues, whether we are staying in a rustic cabin, a tent, or an adjoining room at a resort.
We can’t blame them for having their favourites though.
For our kids, there’s nothing better than having an adjoining room at a hotel. I think it has something to do with feeling grown up and independent. We have a lot of fun with it, like knocking on their door in the morning asking if they are ready for today’s activities. Now what kid wouldn’t like that?
Or it could have something to do with their own balcony, bed, bathroom and their very own TV and in this case TV’s because there was one in the bathroom! Now that was a first. I think it may have blown their minds for that to be even possible.
For some reason our daughter had no problem agreeing to take as many baths as we asked her.
As parents we love having a little privacy and solitude. Closing that adjoining room door for a break and alone time has it’s added perks.
We loved the unique decor of the Prestige Oceanfront Resort. There is an island ocean fresh and modern feel that we haven’t seen before on Vancouver Island.
I should mention that our room did pick up quite a bit of hallway noise, but it must have been because we were directly at the end.
On-Site Restaurant • Sooke West Coast Grill
Sooke West Coast Grill has an ocean view that kids don’t seem to notice but adults can often find themselves in a daze just staring out into the water. My favourite meal was the one where it was warm enough to sit outside on the balcony. Just spectacular.
West Coast Grill offers up delicious culinary creations to suit every appetite.
As you would expect, their speciality is fresh delectables from the sea, although I did enjoy a superb prime rib dinner.
The kids loved their kid menu choices, but be sure to pack some extra vegetables and fruit to munch on during the day.
The lack of ruffage in the kids diet and the ensuing smell from the back of the mini-van just might leave you wondering if something died.
Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke is only 4 years old, so there’s no need for upgrading or refurbishing here. Everything is new and pristine, which means you can relax and not get distracted by stains, weird musty smells, folding back wallpaper… or is that just me who gets bothered by that stuff?
While our stay at Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke was complimentary, you can rest assured that my thoughts, opinions, and findings are my own as always.
